Old Bones
2011 is the seventy-fifth anniversary of The Battle of Cable Street, a stirring rejection of government attempts to allow a platform for racist provocation under the protection of freedom of speech, to which British Social and Political History has given less credit than it is due.
‘Old Bones‘ is the story of two immigrant families and set against the background of the period leading up to – and following – the Battle of Cable Street in 1936. This took place when Oswald Mosley attempted to lead members of his British Union of Fascists through the East End of London and was prevented by the resistance of the communities there.
